The 9 locks of Fonseranes are the most spectacular site on the Canal du Midi
The Romans had already wanted to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean via a canal.
We had to wait until the end of the 17th century and the arrival of Pierre-Paul Riquet for the project to be completed, thus creating a genuine tool of trade and economic development. 69 locks, and their unique architectural aesthetic of being oval, feature along the 240 km of the Canal du Midi, between Toulouse and Sète.
Whether you’d like to stroll around with an audioguide, or would enjoy the Scenovision telling the story of the Canal ; whether you’d like a gourmet lunch or a cruise… It’s all up to you. Even more so, since the site was offered a “lifting”.
The most monumental ones were built in Béziers : the majestic water stairway of Fonseranes, where more than 10 000 boats sail every year, are visited by 425 000 persons each year.
